Spiral Crochet Basket

Tactile, roomy and ready in no time, the Spiral Crochet Basket is as enjoyable to make as it is to use. Crocheted in continuous rounds with an 8mm hook and the simplest of stitches, it’s a relaxing TV project that works up quickly and shows off the gorgeous, velvety texture of Scheepjes Big Darling.

The basket uses just one generous cake of yarn and measures 30cm (12in) across and 15cm (6in) deep. It’s the ideal size for keeping a WIP close by in your craft space, hiding the remotes in the living room, or tidying away woolly winter accessories in the hallway. Handles are optional, so you can make it just how you like it.

PATTERN NOTES

The base of the basket is a flat circle worked in dc. The sides are formed by working in back loops only (blo) for one round, followed by straight rounds of dc. Handles are optional and incorporated into the sides during the final rounds. Basket is worked in continuous rounds (spiral) without joining rounds, use a stitch marker to mark first st of each round and move it up as you go.

Base

Round 1 (RS) Make magic ring, work 6dc into ring. [6 sts]

Round 2 (RS) 2dc in each st around. [12 sts]

Round 3 *1dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [18 sts]

Round 4 *2dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [24 sts]

Round 5 *3dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [30 sts]

Round 6 *4dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [36 sts]

Round 7 *5dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [42 sts]

Round 8 *6dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [48 sts]

Round 9 *7dc, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. [54 sts]

Rounds 2–12 Continue working dc in each st around (both loops).

Sl st to first st of previous round and fasten off or continue to handles.

Optional Handles

26dc, *ch18, skip the next 13 sts, 26dc; repeat from * for the second handle. Work 3 additional rounds of dc, crocheting into all sts and chs to reinforce the handles. Ss to first st of last round, fasten off. Weave in ends.
